Scientific knowledge is built with the participation of citizens.
From the perspective of citizen science, scientific knowledge is built within a network, with the participation of non-scientist volunteers who want to contribute to scientific research. In the Caminhos do Mar project, we rely on the local community and on tourists of the Babitonga Ecosystem to collect data on the aquatic mammals, reptiles and seabirds of our ecosystem. Our Facebook group, called “Encontros pelo Caminho: Vida Marinha na Babitonga” (Encounters on the Way: Marine Wildlife in the Babitonga Ecosystem), is a space for sharing records of animals in the region, which can be a photo, video or description. Everyone can collaborate to monitor the marine fauna of the Babitonga Ecosystem and increase our knowledge on the abundance, distribution, behavior and ecology of these animals. Make a post, telling which animals you saw, where, when, and giving a brief description of this encounter. The group is also a space for us to share experiences in the Babitonga Ecosystem and its surroundings.
